Buddy is Back!!!

From Barbara Hutcherson and the Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation, on Sunday, April 15, 2012:

"Buddy has been on the loose for 6 long months and today, he was captured! LDCRF is grateful to all who have worked so hard to get him back to safety.

Particular thanks to Donna, Nadine and Sam who were steadfast in their dedication to the cause and contributed an amazing amount of time and energy to capturing him.

Special thanks also to the dedicated LDCRF volunteers who kept up the effort, the entire neighborhood of Dunn Loring Woods, Buddy's adopters Rhonda and Greg, and finally to the owners of the home Buddy was borrowing while it was built. In fact, it was Barry Schwartz who grabbed Buddy today and was able to get him contained. Buddy is off to the vet for a checkup, but he looks great."

And a quick follow-up on Monday, April 16th:

The vet visit went well. He trotted right in the door and behaved beautifully for the exam. Still waiting to hear about the 4DX test and the fecal, but he is in great shape as we saw yesterday. obviously Mickey D's, pork roasts and liver all agree with him. He did eat an actual breakfast of dog food this morning and I have explained to him that that is what he can expect from this point forward.

Buddy is looking good, and spending a lot of time around the trap. He seems to be getting more comfortable with the trap but no sign he is going in yet.

Buddy is still visiting the new feeding station but remains suspicious of the new trap.We are hoping with time he will loose his fear and go into the trap.  The date stamp on this picture is incorrect - It should be 02-17-1012.

The Search for Buddy Continues

Yep, the search for Buddy has been going on for a long time now! We are able to keep going because we do get rewarded with sightings and photos of Buddy on wildlife cameras we have trained on a feeding station that we've had going for a time now. Whenever we are out in the area canvassing neighbors or searching for evidence that Buddy has been moving about in the area, we speak to people that have seen him.

But as for the humane trap that we've had set up for some weeks, left open but stocked with tempting food inside, we've noted with disappointment that Buddy has really not shown even a temptation to enter the trap. We think he's likely finding food somewhere because he just meanders past and around the trap, and doesn't appear to be hungry. We need him to be hungry to go in a trap.

So while it's a problem that he doesn't seem to be hungry, we have at least addressed the problem of his fear of the traditional cage-like trap by procuring an enclosure trap, which is an interesting alternative to the traditional humane trap that looks like a cage. The trap is available via Sam Connolly with Pure Gold Pet Trackers, and here's a picture of the trap at work with another dog in an other time and place:

It looks like a minature dumpster, don't you think? So it's less threatening to fearful dogs, and we feel there's a good chance that Buddy would eventually enter this type of enclosure. We did start this new trapping effort over the weekend, in a different location. We've left the old trap in place so there's no real change to the environment, but we've removed the food element at that site. The enclosure trap is being used as a feeding station at times when it isn't being manned by volunteers or the trapper, Sam Connolly.

We gave it a good try this past weekend and didn't see enough of Buddy to make it work, but we do know that this trap has worked in many cases in the past with hard to trap dogs. We are optimistic about the prospects for capturing Buddy with it. While he wasn't caught this past weekend, we are excited to have access to the enclosure trap at this time. We do ask that it be left alone so that there is minimal activity around the trap -- mostly just the volunteers assigned to check on it and replenish food.

As always, please spread the word about Buddy, and please ask everyone you know to call with any Buddy sightings. Until he's captured, we will need sightings to know just where he is, and where to set up the enclosure trap. To that end, what we most need volunteers for at this time, is fliering. Please leave a comment if you can help!

Stay tuned!

Buddy sightings today

Three sightings of Buddy around the Dunn Loring Woods community pool today between 5 and 5:30 pm today.

Sunday, January 29, 2012

Sharon Jones, a volunteer who has been tireless in the search for Buddy since October 2011, recently passed away in an accident.  We miss her and her optimism in the search but we know she is still helping as she can.

Lots of animals visiting the feeding station

Buddy visits the feeding station regularly but isnt' keen on going near the trap openning - yet.  Trying to sweeten the deal for him.  Meanwhile, we have attracted lots of other animals: three foxes, a red shouldered hawk, squirrels, crows, sparrows, racoons, and two other dogs.   An army of volunteers is working hard to make this a wrap.

Saturday, January 28, 2012

Buddy continues to visit the feeding station but doesn't go near the food by the trap.  We are hoping someone else isn;t feeding him so he gets hungry enough to go start going into the trap.

Buddy is staying in area

Buddy is being photographed nightly near the feeding station, but doesn;t seem to want to go near the trap.

Sunday, January 22, 2012

January 22 activity.

Buddy is getting more relaxed with the feeding station although is still quite suspicious of it.  He hung around the station between 12:30 and 5:30 am today, and looked like he wanted the food but just couldn't bring himself to approach it.  All in good time.  We are patient.

Another sighting

Buddy was sighted near the pool during the early morning hours of Jan. 20.   We are hoping he will start being a regular at a feeding station we have set up so that we can gain his trust and trap him.  At least he is still in the area and seems to be ok. Here's one of the photos showing us it's definitely Buddy:

Thursday, January 19, 2012

We are attracting a lot to the feeding station - foxes, racoons, squirrels, and crows, and even a tan dog with a dark colored half tail, but no Buddy so far.

Wednesday, January 18, 2012

Two promising signs this week.  All the food was gone from the feeding station one day and a very large paw print was found at the station.  We are hoping it is Buddy and that he will hang around the site and eat and get comforatble with the trap so we can eventually set it.

A large dog print at the feedling station this week.

Monday, January 16, 2012

A little food was gone from the feeding station today but yesterday we saw squirrels feeding on the dog food.  There is a need to replenish the flyers since most are now gone - with new updated flyers.   Since the two primary volunteers are sick, sure could use some help.  Please contact mariannekarolburke@verizon.net if you are willing to help hang flyers.

Still no Buddy

We continue to check the feeding station twice a day, and it is disappointingly undisturbed.  Come on Buddy - Lots of good dog and cat food waiting for you.

Monday, January 9, 2012

A fox but no Buddy so far.

We have evidence that a fox visited the feeding station last night but so far no sign of Buddy.

Setting up Buddy's feeding station

Setting up feeding station - from top left is Nancy, Sharon and Nadene. We spread the baking flour to get footprints to see what is eating the food.

Trying to attract Buddy to a feeding station

A feeding station has been set up for Buddy so we can attract him to a certain spot with the hopes of gaining his trust.  Once we are sure he is visiting regularly we will set a trap.

It would help if anyone knows of other feeding stations - perhaps feral cat stations?-  in the Vienna VA area - that you let us know where else we may be able to look for him.

You can email Marianne with any information about where else he may be eating in Vienna.  All information will be kept confidential on request.

Buddy sighted at end of 2011

Buddy was sighted Friday morning Dec. 30 crossing Cottage Ave near the pool by one observer and by another observer running up (north) the stream that same morning.  Although the owner went to look for him Friday morning, he was not found. Also there was a possible sighting in the stream at the same location by the second observer either that Friday or that Saturday afternoon.
