Falls Church sighting of black dog probably not Buddy

Some of the volunteers searched an area of Falls Church where a black lab mix had been sighted today. The information was posted on Craigslist and was shared by Lost &Found Dogs of the DC Metro Area. A search of the area was not fruitful, no one on the street had seen the dog, and as it turns out the person who posted the notice thought it probably wasn't Buddy - ears not long enough. But everyone still appreciated her getting the word out on the lost dog - it well could have been him. It wasn't far from the OD trail.

Day of searching for Buddy with few clues

A sighting of Buddy from about a week and a half ago was reported by a family on Drexel today. Apparently that day he was running very fast back and forth through the backyards on the west side of Drexel north of the pool. Others in the neighborhood were surprised that he was still missing - they thought he had been found. So the new flyers we hung this week should be helpful.

NEW SIGHTING 11/29!!!

BUDDY UPDATE!!! NEW SIGHTING 11/29 NEAR THE HOUSE BEHIND COMMUNITY POOL!!! :)

I got a call this morning that Buddy was just seen again very close to our street, crossing Cottage Street and heading down behind the Dunn Loring Woods community pool. The woman who called in was walking her dog and has been looking for Buddy. She said that he FLEW across the street, so he is probably hunting a fox who lives down behind the pool. She also said that he looked fine, and confirmed that she did not see a collar. I'm pretty sure that it was him.

Wanted to let you all know, as it's been so long since we've had what I would consider to be an accurate sighting...

I think that we just need to keep posting flyers and also put them in some of the house mail slots on the streets across Cottage from our little neighborhood; we have already put flyers over here in the mail slots on Carnegie, Bucknell, Wesleyan, and Berea.

Places to Flyer

We can use more paper anywhere in the area again...from Idylwood Rd to Cottage St on Gallows Rd, down Cottage St to Cedar Ln, and up Cedar Ln to Electric Ave.  Posters on the W&OD trail b/w Gallows and Cedar, as well as a little bit past those points, would be helpful, as would anything in the Dunn Loring Woods neighborhoods themselves, particularly on the Cedar Lane side.  There are some posters up in various places, but we can always use more. THANKS!!!!

Trapping Research from Marianne

I just contacted Virginia's Dept Game and Inland Fish, and they referred me to the wildife biologist for the Fairfax area. I requested that we be allowed to borrow a culvert trap. Usually you pull them like a trailer and can use them in a suburban area safely. Cross your fingers that they let us. It will be like old times - cooking bacon to attract a big wild thing into a culvert trap. I'll let you know what I hear. They aren't pretty, but they work.

Another idea while we wait for the biologist to get back to us. If they have a neighbor with a fenced in yard, we could counter weight the gate to where when Buddy goes after the bait the gate closes on him. Not perfect, but worth a try if they have a willing neighbor. I could probably rig something. Worth a try.

Just did some reading about how to make a hav-a-heart trap more attracktive to a dog - put a towel or mat inside it so the dog doesn't have to step on the wire floor, and put a blanket over it to make more of a cave. But don't interfere with the mechanism.

BUDDY UPDATE: 11/7

NEW SIGHTING LAST NIGHT 11/6 at Carnegie and Syracuse Circle!

Hopefully the venture out to NFCU was part of Buddy's circle, as Echo suggested, b/c at around midnite last nite, he was seen running off into Syracuse Circle from Carnegie again.

I walked down there this morning and didn't see him, but laid a trail of torn strips of one of my tees and treats back to the house.  I also ran another trail from the house to that same side of Carnegie, down to the elementary school location where he was seen a while ago (which backs to Citadel Place). There is a little cul de sac directly across from the back entrance to Stenwood Elementary School, and off of that, there is an overgrown gravel lane to 8234 Citadel Place.  (This house is BEHIND the Citadel Place cul de sac that sits off of Carnegie near our house, and you can cut through an unfenced back yard from that cul de sac to 8234 as well.)  8234 is an older large house surrounded by trees and overgrowth.  I'm pretty sure that this is where Buddy has gone when he has cut through the back of the Syracuse Circle cul de sac; it is fairly undisturbed back there.  Greg checked all through this area when the original tip came in from the spotting on Citadel, but this is probably a good place for the tracker to check...Again, however, we pretty much know where he is; it's just a matter of getting him home.  Anyway, I walked through the front section of that lane and laid more treats and tee strips, and also led a trail from 8234 through the back of the Citadel Place cul de sac cut-thru and back to the house.

I also saw some relatively fresh dog poop on Carnegie, but hard to tell whether this is Buddy.

We can't cook on our grill b/c it is broken (gas leak that we haven't found yet), but we're going to reset the trap w/some wet dog food today and also cook some hamburgers on the stove and leave the side door to the house open...maybe we can get him to come back to the house before the darned raccoon gets back into the trap.

Anyway, this is all good news...just wish he wasn't running every time people saw him...

That's all for now; we'll let you know if anything interesting happens in the near future.

BUDDY UPDATE 11/6

NEW SIGHTING AT ELECTRIC AVE AND WOODFORD RD ON 11/5!!!!!

We just got a call that he was seen off of Electric Avenue, on Wilford, yesterday, early morning. When people see him, he is usually running, and they don't know why. Someone saw the flyers today (probably off of Cedar), and just called this afternoon. This means he's moving and he's entirely out of the Dunn Loring Woods community now and creates a new area for flyers.

I just checked the map for Wilford, but can't find it. She said it was off of Electric, and so I think she must have meant Woodford Road, which is a major road through a neighborhood off of Electric Avenue. There's a traffic light at that intersection. If he follows Woodford all the way out, it would lead him to Tysons Corner. This is near Navy Federal Credit Union headquarters as well, and still near the W&OD Trail.

We will need to get signs up over off of Electric, Woodford, and probably some of the other streets that intersect with them there, and at points on the trail down behind the credit union. I understand if people are busy, but maybe someone lives over there? Well try to get out there, too.

BUDDY UPDATES: 11/2

BUDDY UPDATES: 11/2 Two new sightings on the Trail near Cedar

We got a call today that Buddy was spotted last nite at around 9PM, but on the W&OD Trail off of Cedar Lane, heading away from Cedar and towards Vienna near the Wedderburn area.  (This is over off the other side of the Dunn Loring Woods development; there is a partially developed area of McMansions off of Cedar Lane called Wedderburn Estates, next to the trail, and I understand that that area used to be called Wedderburn or Midgetville (?) a long time ago...)  The guy said that Buddy was running and then darted off the trail even though he wasn't trying to catch him, but said that he looked ok.

You can see a map of the area by clicking HERE

I think that we don't have a lot of flyers down in that area, other than right at the trail at the intersection of Cedar Lane.  That's a whole new area to canvas if that's where he's hanging out now.  Or, it could just be part of his circle.  We haven't had any suggestion of him here at the house lately.  Greg put flyers in everyone's mailbox on our side of Cottage in our little section of the neighborhood this past weekend.  I would like to get flyers to all of the vet clinics and hospitals in the area; maybe I can work on that soon.  I called most of the ones in Fairfax County w/a description when he was first lost, and emailed some pics to a few, but real flyers would probably be better.

We just got another call from the same guy, who saw Buddy again near that same area tonite (at around 8:30 PM), heading towards Cedar in the area right there at the trail, near Overlook Park?  Greg went over there; if we have any luck, we'll let you know. He said that he looked approachable...

Buddy Update: 10/29

We combed Syracuse Circle last nite, with no luck.  I dropped some treats on the sidewalk from there back to our house.

Got a call at 3PM that he was over in the backyard of a house at Citadel Place, across the street from the back entrance to the elementary school.  However, he was not there when he got over there...

New Buddy Sighting!

BUDDY UPDATE: Friday 10/28

Just got a call tonite (10 PM) that he was on Syracuse Circle, which is just down the street from here on our side of Cottage, so he is in the neighborhood. He was on Carnegie until he ran up into Syracuse. Greg was at work and he is checking now, but don't know that he'll be able to get him back in...but this is good news for him to be so close.

Greg just came back to house for leash and hot dogs... The people who called us just saw him go through the back of Syracuse Circle towards the other half of Bucknell St. as it heads toward Cottage.

Things you can do to help!!!

We need more flyers in areas with recent sightings which include on the east side of Gallows near Amanda Place, Stenhouse Place, Idlywood, on the W&OD trails, and at major intersections. Some other places still to notify are the nursing rehab center at Idlywood, Thoreau Middle, and the Korean Central Presbyterian Church.

Flyers are the reason we keep getting these sightings and know he's out there so they are an important part of finding Buddy.

Here's are links to the flyer in different forms:
