Trapping Research from Marianne

I just contacted Virginia's Dept Game and Inland Fish, and they referred me to the wildife biologist for the Fairfax area. I requested that we be allowed to borrow a culvert trap. Usually you pull them like a trailer and can use them in a suburban area safely. Cross your fingers that they let us. It will be like old times - cooking bacon to attract a big wild thing into a culvert trap. I'll let you know what I hear. They aren't pretty, but they work.

Another idea while we wait for the biologist to get back to us. If they have a neighbor with a fenced in yard, we could counter weight the gate to where when Buddy goes after the bait the gate closes on him. Not perfect, but worth a try if they have a willing neighbor. I could probably rig something. Worth a try.

Just did some reading about how to make a hav-a-heart trap more attracktive to a dog - put a towel or mat inside it so the dog doesn't have to step on the wire floor, and put a blanket over it to make more of a cave. But don't interfere with the mechanism.

BUDDY UPDATE: 11/7

NEW SIGHTING LAST NIGHT 11/6 at Carnegie and Syracuse Circle!

Hopefully the venture out to NFCU was part of Buddy's circle, as Echo suggested, b/c at around midnite last nite, he was seen running off into Syracuse Circle from Carnegie again.

I walked down there this morning and didn't see him, but laid a trail of torn strips of one of my tees and treats back to the house.  I also ran another trail from the house to that same side of Carnegie, down to the elementary school location where he was seen a while ago (which backs to Citadel Place). There is a little cul de sac directly across from the back entrance to Stenwood Elementary School, and off of that, there is an overgrown gravel lane to 8234 Citadel Place.  (This house is BEHIND the Citadel Place cul de sac that sits off of Carnegie near our house, and you can cut through an unfenced back yard from that cul de sac to 8234 as well.)  8234 is an older large house surrounded by trees and overgrowth.  I'm pretty sure that this is where Buddy has gone when he has cut through the back of the Syracuse Circle cul de sac; it is fairly undisturbed back there.  Greg checked all through this area when the original tip came in from the spotting on Citadel, but this is probably a good place for the tracker to check...Again, however, we pretty much know where he is; it's just a matter of getting him home.  Anyway, I walked through the front section of that lane and laid more treats and tee strips, and also led a trail from 8234 through the back of the Citadel Place cul de sac cut-thru and back to the house.

I also saw some relatively fresh dog poop on Carnegie, but hard to tell whether this is Buddy.

We can't cook on our grill b/c it is broken (gas leak that we haven't found yet), but we're going to reset the trap w/some wet dog food today and also cook some hamburgers on the stove and leave the side door to the house open...maybe we can get him to come back to the house before the darned raccoon gets back into the trap.

Anyway, this is all good news...just wish he wasn't running every time people saw him...

That's all for now; we'll let you know if anything interesting happens in the near future.

BUDDY UPDATE 11/6

NEW SIGHTING AT ELECTRIC AVE AND WOODFORD RD ON 11/5!!!!!

We just got a call that he was seen off of Electric Avenue, on Wilford, yesterday, early morning. When people see him, he is usually running, and they don't know why. Someone saw the flyers today (probably off of Cedar), and just called this afternoon. This means he's moving and he's entirely out of the Dunn Loring Woods community now and creates a new area for flyers.

I just checked the map for Wilford, but can't find it. She said it was off of Electric, and so I think she must have meant Woodford Road, which is a major road through a neighborhood off of Electric Avenue. There's a traffic light at that intersection. If he follows Woodford all the way out, it would lead him to Tysons Corner. This is near Navy Federal Credit Union headquarters as well, and still near the W&OD Trail.

We will need to get signs up over off of Electric, Woodford, and probably some of the other streets that intersect with them there, and at points on the trail down behind the credit union. I understand if people are busy, but maybe someone lives over there? Well try to get out there, too.
